Benches clear in Milwaukee after Scuffle at second base.

The Milwaukee Brewers are the Cinderella team in baseball in 2018. None of the experts picked the Brewers to be ahead of the Chicago Cubs at any point in the season. With success in this league, also comes a target on your back. For the Brewers, that is no different. This scuffle made it clear that the St. Louis Cardinals are not going to back down.

During the 8th inning of a tied game between the Milwaukee Brewers and the St. Louis Cardinals, Eric Sogard reaches base. With the pitcher batting, a bunt is called by the manager to move Sogard into scoring position. This is basic baseball stuff here, nothing out of the ordinary. The pitcher successfully puts down the bunt but it goes straight to the pitcher. Even with a fast runner at first, the bad bunt gives the pitcher an easy play at second base.

However, the pitchers throw is off to the right and Yairo Munoz is pulled off the bag at second base. This is where things get a bit dicey. As Munoz is reaching for the ball, Sogard slides in to try to reach the bag. Hard contact is made but the slide looked clean and within the rules. Sogard seems to ask if Munoz is okay right after the play but both players get heated shortly after. Words are exchanged followed by both benches and bullpens clearing to sort out the confusion.

It appeared to be a little bad luck that caused the contact to the infielder on the play but in the heat of the moment it is understandable that the players were upset. The fact the everyone on both teams ran out of the dugout because of this incident restarts the debate of baseballs sacred “unwritten rules”. It is apparent from this video that not even the players know the rules that are unwritten so it is unclear why these two players were so flustered. That’s baseball though, Milwaukee ended up winning the game on a walk off home run by Jesus but that is a different story.
